North Woolwich Road
Pedestrian Footbridge: Competition
The scheme was to connect the Thames Barrier Park in the south with urban development to the north, creating a strategic pedestrian link between the Thames Barrier and the transport systems at Customs House. The fixed requirement of headroom over the North Woolwich Road and the finished level of the Green Dock Wall dictated the need for a slender construction. The ‘ribbon’ concept was formed to carry a lightweight pedestrian walkway. The structural concrete ‘ribbon’ is stretched between two concrete abutments and supported by columns. The walkway is framed by a see-through balustrading with incorporated lighting.
