Royal Victoria Dock: Competition
The competition was for a pedestrian footbridge to link the Docklands Light Railway with new residential areas. The concept developed had to respond to the microclimatic conditions of the site. The open ‘cage’ construction would consist of a stainless steel net constructed from cast nodes and tubular members with an insert of perforated panels to alleviate wind pressure. The horizontal deck/roof is envisaged as translucent glass whilst all vertical elements would be manufactured from expanded metal. The walkway was proposed as semi-translucent glass bricks which would also be illuminated at night.
